At Rancho OB/GYN, our gynecologists tailor everything to you and your specific symptoms. Fibroids occur in about 70% of women and are often undiagnosed because they don’t always cause symptoms. The best way to specifically diagnose fibroids is with an ultrasound. At Rancho OB/GYN, our goal is to better your health by tailoring a treatment plan to your individualized concerns and symptoms. Fibroids are not cancer so they do not need to be treated if they are not causing you a lot of bothersome symptoms. There are many different treatment options for fibroids and they range from observation (watching and not treating them) to medication or surgery.
Rancho OB/GYN in Murrieta, California, are experts in all types of women’s health issues. The most common issues are:
Fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are overgrowths of muscle and scar tissue that occur in the different layers of the uterus. They are abnormal growths in the muscle of the uterus, but are not cancer.
They are typically slow growing and can range in size. Sometimes, they can be as small as a pea (a fraction of an inch), but sometimes they grow to the size of a small melon (multiple inches in diameter).
Not every woman with fibroids has symptoms. In fact, most women live their whole life without knowing they have fibroids. When symptoms do exist, they include:
Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Bleeding between menses
Anemia
Chronic pelvic pain, "heaviness," or pressure
Constipation
Frequent need to urinate
Feeling of not completely emptying when you urinate
Infertility
Recurrent miscarriages
At Rancho OB/GYN, we are trained in treating uterine fibroids.
If you have symptoms that you think are related to uterine fibroids, please call Rancho OBGyn’s office to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist because better health starts here!
If you were ordered an ultrasound to look for fibroids in your uterus, then you will need to call the radiology office provided on the order to schedule the ultrasound.
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image. To look inside the uterus, the ultrasound probe may be placed on the abdomen (transabdominal) or within the vagina (transvaginal).
Typically, both are done as the vaginal images are often more detailed and they allow our gynecologists to not only see the fibroids, but also determine which layer of the uterus in which they are located and measure their size.
Thankfully, fibroids are not usually dangerous. Fibroids are not cancer so they do not need to be treated if they are not causing you a lot of bothersome symptoms.
Fibroids can become dangerous when they cause you to bleed a lot. This is because heavy or prolonged bleeding can cause you to become weak, lightheaded, dizzy, or even pass out from severe anemia.
Sometimes, the bleeding can be so severe that you might need to go to the emergency room for a blood transfusion!
If you are experiencing heavy or prolonged bleeding with your periods, please call Rancho OB/GYN so that we can help you regain your health!
It depends on where they are located.

An endometrial biopsy is where a sample of the tissue on the inside of the uterus is obtained to rule out cancer as the cause of irregular bleeding.
Most of the time there is nothing to worry about. However, if cancer is a concern, it is very important to complete the biopsy as soon as possible to rule it out because early diagnosis and treatment is key.
The biopsy is performed at our Rancho OBGyn office during a pelvic exam. It involves placing a skinny, straw-looking device through the cervix into the uterus and taking a tissue sample. It is a relatively quick procedure that can cause cramping as it is being performed, but is overall well-tolerated by patients.
The treatment for irregular or bothersome periods depends on what is causing them.
Sometimes, no treatment is needed.
Sometimes, the treatment may involve taking some sort of hormonal contraception to regulate your periods, such as birth control pills or placing an IUD.
Sometimes, it involves surgery.
This is why, at Rancho OB/GYN, our gynecologists work hard to identify the exact cause of your irregular periods so that our providers can tailor any treatment recommendations to your individual needs. If you live in the Temecula or Murrieta, CA area and struggle with your periods, please call our Rancho OB/GYN office to schedule an appointment because better health starts here!
Whether you will have future problems getting pregnant because you are experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding will depend on the cause.
