A fibroid, also known as leiomyomas, is an overgrowth of muscle and scar tissue that can occur in the different layers of the uterus. Fibroids are typically slow growing and can range in size. Sometimes, they can be as small as a pea (a fraction of an inch), but sometimes they grow to the size of a small melon (multiple inches in diameter).
Thankfully, fibroids are not cancerous. However, they can be bothersome. Fibroids occur in about 70% of women and are often undiagnosed because they don’t always cause symptoms.
Not every woman with fibroids has symptoms. In fact, most women live their whole life without knowing they have fibroids. When symptoms do exist, they include:
Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Bleeding between menses
Anemia
Chronic pelvic pain, "heaviness," or pressure
Constipation
Frequent need to urinate
Feeling of not completely emptying when you urinate
Infertility
Recurrent miscarriages

The best way to specifically diagnose fibroids is with an ultrasound. However, at Rancho OB/GYN, our providers tailor everything to you and your specific symptoms. This means we will also order additional tests to rule out other causes of your symptoms. For instance, if your main symptoms have to do with urination, our gynecologists will assess for a urine infection and perform a swab to check for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as these conditions can all cause similar symptoms.
If you experience irregular menstrual bleeding or bleeding between your menses, our gynecologists will check your hormone levels. Our providers may also recommend performing a biopsy of the inside of the uterus to rule out cancer as the cause of the abnormal bleeding pattern.
If your medical provider told you that you should have an ultrasound to look for fibroids in your uterus, you will need to call the radiology office provided on the order sheet to schedule the appointment. Your physician should have given you a referral with the phone number and address of where your ultrasound will be conducted.
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image. To look inside the uterus, the ultrasound probe may be placed on the abdomen (transabdominal) or within the vagina (transvaginal).
When looking for fibroids, images are usually taken of both the abdominal and vaginal areas. This is because vaginal images are often more detailed, which helps your OB/GYN determine where the fibroid is located within the uterus how large they are.
Luckily, fibroids are not cancerous. This means that they do not even need to be treated unless they are causing bothersome symptoms.
However, fibroids can become dangerous when they cause you to bleed a lot. This is because heavy or prolonged bleeding can cause you to become weak, lightheaded, dizzy, or even pass out from severe anemia.
Sometimes, the bleeding can be so severe that you might need to go to the emergency room for a blood transfusion! If you are experiencing heavy or prolonged bleeding with your periods or think you might have symptoms related to fibroids, please call Rancho OB/GYN in Murrieta, CA to schedule and appointment today because better health starts here!
